Gem of a deal for Puffing Billy anniversary

All aboard! Puffing Billy is offering a great deal on tickets to mark a special milestone on 18 October.

Puffing Billy is about to celebrate a very special milestone.

Thursday 18 October will mark 20 years since the reopening of the railway’s Lakeside to Gembrook line.

To celebrate, Puffing Billy is offering two tickets for the price of one for all passengers who travel the route on the anniversary.

The day will also celebrate the reintroduction of locomotive 14A, which hauled the first train on the line following the 1998 reopening.

Puffing Billy Acting CEO Jonathan Clancy said the reopening of the Lakeside to Gembrook section of the railway was significant 20 years ago.

“I am looking forward to celebrating this milestone with past and present members of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, including those that were involved in the reconstruction of the line over 20 years ago, as well as passengers who come to help us mark this special occasion,” he said.

Mr Clancy said the Lakeside to Gembrook journey was perfect for families with young children and those wanting to beat the crowds.

“The train takes passengers over three historic timber rail bridges and winds through the unspoilt Wright State Forest,” he said.

“As the train climbs towards Gembrook, the line-side bush gives way to extensive views of rolling farmlands and distant mountain ranges. It is a spectacular experience.”

THE HISTORY OF PUFFING BILLY
  • The original Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook line officially opened in December 1900. However services ceased in August 1953 following a series of landslides.
  • In 1955, the Puffing Billy Preservation Society was formed to save the railway from permanent closure. The railway returned to operation between Belgrave and Menzies Creek by 1962, followed by additional sections of the line.
  • It wasn’t until February 1991 that reconstruction of the Lakeside to Gembrook section began. This involved the reconstruction of four bridges, four stations and 11km of railway. Most of the work was completed by Puffing Billy Preservation Society Volunteers, with some help from the Army Reserves.
  • The Lakeside to Gembrook line officially reopened on Sunday 18 October 1998, with the first train to travel the line from Lakeside to Gembrook being hauled by 14A.
