Top tips for styling a teen bedroom

These days, teenagers are much more like adults, often choosing neutral colours and more mature furniture. Teens also try to fit their whole lives into their room. Bedrooms need to be multi-purpose; a space where they sleep, study and entertain their friends.

Beds
Fabric covered beds are very popular, with teens choosing beds in shades of silver, grey, charcoal and even linen and taupe shades. When you start with a good quality neutral bed, it is then easy to change the colour scheme of the room with bed linen and soft furnishings as tastes change.
King single and double beds are preferred over queen sized beds unless the teenager’s room is extra big. A smaller bed gives more room for other furniture they need such as a desk, wardrobe, tall boy and seating area.

Storage
Teens need smart storage solutions to keep floors clear and clutter at bay. Storage boxes or ottomans can be ordered in same matching fabric as the bed. It can also double as a bench seat under a window which can be used as a ‘hang out space’.

Bed Linen
In summer, natural linen is recommended for sheet sets and doona (quilt) covers. We suggest cotton all the way. With Melbourne weather being so bizarre, you can’t go past a woolen doona. Modern woolen doonas are very lightweight and surprisingly cool in summer. Choose a good quality ‘all-seasons’ weight woolen doona and your teen will be set all year round. Layering is key if nights get cool.
Cotton mattress protectors are recommended for all beds to lengthen the life of your mattresses. These are sold as well-fitted sheets that don’t move or pull off the bed if your teen tosses and turns. Both the protectors and doonas are machine washable and are dryer-friendly; perfect for when you need to freshen up the bed linen.

Tech solutions
Teens have devices, which means charging cables. Look for clever storage solutions and charging stations to keep cables under control. Alternatively check out our range of beds that have a USB port as a part of the bed. It’s definitely the way of the future.

Decorating
With neutral furniture as a foundation, teens can personalise their space with the colours of their bed linen, cushions and throws. Many teen boys like navy blue, greys and white and bold florals are popular with teen girls right now. Prints are another way to decorate a bedroom as these are easy to swap out as children grow up.
