A time to celebrate, not judge

OPINION

The new royal baby has arrived and while it’s created a flurry of excitement, the delivery has also courted criticism.

Pictures of the yet-to-be-named royal, held by Princess Kate standing beside husband Prince William, in a bright red dress outside the hospital just hours after the birth have taken the world by storm.

And as expected, social media went crazy over the snap.

Some marvelled at how Princess Kate could look so amazing (and manage to squeeze on some stockings) a mere seven hours after giving birth.

Others slammed her for creating an unreal expectation for women – because they couldn’t get out of their pyjamas for weeks after delivering their baby.

When I first saw the photo, I have to admit that I laughed to myself when comparing it to my own experience just eight months ago.

To me, fact she was wearing makeup, had her hair blow dried and was wearing stockings, was something that deserved respect.

After my 50 minute, drug free labour I was desperate for a shower – but I was too exhausted to walk to the bathroom (let alone worry about my hair or make-up).

All I wanted to do was sleep and hold my little girl in my arms (not at the same time).

But, because of her privileged life, Princess Kate wasn’t so lucky.

She was robbed of the initial sleep and cuddles with her new son, because she had to share him with the outside world, as per protocol.

Sure, once she got home I’m sure she had all the bells and whistles us normal mums can only dream of.

But imagine having to spend those special early hours getting “photo ready” while the worlds media waits outside.

She did it her way and I did it mine – who’s to say she didn’t change into her daggy PJs as soon as she got home anyway?

So instead of judging Princess Kate or any other mum – why don’t we instead focus on the fact that another healthy baby was born into this world.

That is something to celebrate – not criticise.
