Perks of being a family day care educator

Family day care can offer flexibility and a relaxed environment.

Although Aimee Keays began her career as an educator in long day care, the need for greater flexibility and one-on-one interactions with children led her to start her own family day care.

It proved to be the perfect solution for her.

Since starting Aimee’s Little K’s Family Day Care in 2015 in the comfort and privacy of her own home in Langwarrin, Aimee hasn’t looked back.

Registered with not-for-profit Windermere Child and Family Services to run her family day care service, Aimee can focus on delivering personalised care.

“Windermere handles all the administrative tasks and immunisations and helps with risk assessments related to allergies and health conditions,” she says of a collaborative partnership.

The small group setting within the relaxed atmosphere of her home also means calmer children and reduced incidence of illness.

“I am able to provide better quality care for each family and I have more time to spend with my own children,” she adds.

The children love going to Aimee’s family day care and feel at home in the laidback environment – so much so that, according to one family, it’s like going to an auntie’s house or a friend’s house for their child.

Aimee shares in this joy and doesn’t hesitate to recommend her line of work to others.

“I love that I get to form lasting bonds with the families. If you like a calmer environment, choosing your own hours, and being your own boss, I’d say go for it,” she says.
